Harmandir Sahib is often called the spiritual heart of Amritsar. The city gets its name from the sacred Amrit Sarovar, which was established during the time of Guru Ram Das Ji, the fourth Sikh Guru. According to tradition, the waters of the sarovar are considered Amrit, or divine nectar. This belief led to the city being named Amritsar, meaning the Pool of Nectar.
